What to Wear After Hip Surgery
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, over 2.5 million Americans are currently living with an artificial hip. With the percentage of patients aged 45-64 having gone up 123% in 2014, the simple fact is that hip replacements are becoming more and more common among generations of Americans who wish to stay active. More likely than not, you know someone who will need an artificial hip in their lifetime, chances are, so could you.
Bimla Picot, CEO and founder of Reboundwear®, went through this exact experience with her own mother, who required hip replacement surgery. She struggled to find post-surgical apparel that was both comfortable, stylish, and most importantly, practical for recovery.

Moving Around
Best Vehicle for After Hip Replacement
Car Transfer
The front seat is the best option for people who’ve had hip surgery because it offers more legroom, can be adjusted to your comfort and allows you easier access to a seat belt.
If you are traveling in a vehicle for an extended period of time, stop every couple of hours or so and get out to walk around. This will keep blood circulation flowing throughout your legs as well as prevent your muscles from stiffening.
To have a comfortable car ride after hip surgery, follow these simple tips
- Make sure your seat is as far back as possible. Get as close to the vehicle as possible using your walker or crutches.
- Slowly lower yourself to the car seat. You can roll down the car window fully, and use the car door frame and the seat headrest to use as a support while sitting.
- Slide down into the seat slowly. And then bring your legs up and into the car.
Chair Transfer
Avoid recliners, couches, and soft seating until your doctor tells you otherwise. Stiff-backed chairs with armrests are great to sit in because they make it easier to stand up out of them.
If the seat is too low then place one or two pillows on it so you can sit more conveniently on the seat.
To sit comfortably on a chair after hip surgery, follow these simple tips
- Come close to the chair until you feel both your legs touching the chair surface.
- Reach back with one hand for an armrest, while keeping your leg out in front.
- Lower your body slowly, keeping your operated leg straight out. Slightly bend your knee, once seated.
- While getting up, push up using the armrests while keeping your operated leg out in front of you.
