The Power of Positivity: Lessons from the Disability Community
Launching Reboundwear coincided with a time when adaptive clothing and disability awareness were largely neglected. Since then society has come a long way and over the past few years we've seen significant progress in healthcare, community building, and inclusivity for people of all abilities. Much of this progress is thanks to the tireless efforts of passionate individuals and organizations. Recently, we've had the privilege of participating in some of the programs that further this mission by providing valuable information and resources to this vibrant community.
Today it feels like we are living in a world where everyone seems so negative. Yet, at the disability events we’ve attended, we are constantly struck and wowed by this community that is goal-oriented and seemingly undeterred by challenges. It made us realize that we could learn a lot from them and we wanted to share three valuable takeaways with you.
- Laughter is the Best Medicine: We met hundreds of people at conferences who are hopeful, positive, and above all, funny. They want to have fun and enjoy life, just like everyone else.
- Small Changes Make a Big Difference: At the recent YAI Central Park Challenge in NYC, we participated in the Adaptive Fashion Booth where occupational therapists and members of The International Academy of Hope (iHOPE) made adjustments to our table to accommodate those with visual disabilities and textural sensitivities. Our booth showcased many adaptive clothing items, including Reboundwear, and attendees could make their own zipper pulls with beads and lanyards. Simple changes like separating different textured beads and colors, and using contrasting backgrounds, made it easier for people with visual or sensory disabilities to navigate our booth.
- Patience Truly is a Virtue: We often hear stories from our customers about how they became disabled. Many with spinal injuries for example, were told they would never walk again or would spend the rest of their lives in a bed. These same individuals now count their steps, aiming to one day run, dance, or get back on a dirt bike. Their unwavering determination and patience showcase incredible resilience.
The disability community teaches us that with a positive outlook, even the greatest obstacles can be overcome. But the focus isn't just about overcoming limitations; it's about inspiring innovation and fostering a more inclusive world. By joining the conversation and embracing these valuable lessons, we can all benefit from the ingenuity and resilience of this remarkable group.
